Existen dos tipos diferentes de cambio. El Cambio 1, tiene lugar dentro de un determinado sistema, que en sí permanece inmodificado, el Cambio 2, por otro lado, cambia el sistema mismo.
La capacidad de aprender está relacionada con el Cambio 2.
Los sistemas que tienen la capacidad de variar de manera cualitativa son mucho más capaces de adaptarse a las alteraciones de su ambiente que los sistemas que sólo admiten cambios de primer orden; ya que el Cambio 2 se basa en la retroalimentación positiva, que aumenta las desviaciones e inicia así el desarrollo de nuevas estructuras.
